Carson LibraryMay 2008Summer is a wonderful time to kick back, relax and have fun, right? Don’t forget that summer is also a great time to read! Many parents are concerned that their children see reading as a chore and not as fun. The summer months are a good time to change that point of view. How? Help them find books they’re interested in. Reluctant readers need to find that book that sparks their own personal reading wildfire. Think of it as a challenge! Look for books that mirror your child’s interests. Check the public library or visit The Bookies for advice. Don’t worry if you child wants to read comic books or books about sports. This all counts as reading and helps kids with comprehension. Biographies on popular sports stars and pop stars are interesting to kids. Another way to encourage your kids to read is to read aloud to them. Find a great book and take turns reading to each other or start a new fantasy series together. Children can often comprehend material that is 2 or 3 grade levels ahead of what they can read by themselves. Locally, Barnes and Noble and Denver Public Library offer incentives for kids to participate in their summer reading programs. Check http://summerofreading.org/ for more info on DPL’s program. A representative will be at Carson on 5/12 to tell the kids about the program. Visit your local Barnes and Noble to find out more about their program.
